Within three years after his returnfrom the Muskingum, he was attacked with a feverat Pensacola, which closed, by a premature death,the career of a gallant soldier and a generous man. The Delawares and Shawanoes, mindful of their en-gagement and of the hostages which they had givento keep it, sent their deputies, within the appointedtime, to Sir William Johnson, who concluded a treatywith them, stipulating, among the other terms, thatthey should grant free passage through their countryto English troops and travellers; that they shouldmake full restitution for the goods taken from thetraders at the breaking out of the war; and thatthey should aid their triumphant enemies in the dif-ficult task which yet remained to be accomplished— that of taking possession of the Illinois, and oc-cupying its posts and settlements with British troops.1 1 MS. We turn to a region of which, as yet, we havecaught but transient glimpses ; a region which toour forefathers seemed remote and strange, as to usthe mountain strongholds of the Apaches, or thewastes of farthest Oregon. The country of the Illi-nois wTas chiefly embraced within the boundaries ofthe state which now retains the name. Thitherward,from the east, the west, and the north, three mightyrivers rolled their tributary waters; wdiile countlesssmaller streams — small only in comparison — trav-ersed the land with a watery network, impregnatingthe warm soil with exuberant fecundity. From theeastward, the Ohio—La Belle Riviere—pursued itswindings for more than a thousand miles. TheMississippi descended from the distant north; whilefrom its fountains in the west, three thousandmiles away, the Missouri poured its torrent towardsthe same common centre.
