Each engine requires two separate founda-tions, with a wheel pit between, each of which consists of a sub-structure of seven courses of granite, 12 feet high and about 9 feetwide at the top. Upon this is built the superstructure of brick 9feet high and 8 feet wide, into which are set the capstones on whichthe cylinders and engine beds rest. Tlie air pumps and condensershave independent foundations of granite, as also the engine belttighteners and two rows of counter-shafting. Steam is supplied to the engines from two mains, there being aconnection to both mains, though only a single pipe comes to theengines, the two branches being connected by valves half waybetween the mains and the engines.
