f the growth of timber.Further facilities for the study of forestry are supplied by the Saginaw Forest Farm, a tractof eighty acres about three miles west of the University, which was bought and presented to theUniversity for this purpose in 1903 by Regent Arthur Hill. This farm is a typical example ofthe low, hilly land of the drift district, and contains an unusual variety of soil conditions, varyingfrom heavy clay to sandy gravel. In addition to its other features, it contains a lake of clearwater from ten to fifty feet deep and covering an area of twelve acres. (See page 367.) Page 122. —In the summer of 1902 the wooden flooring of the entire first floor of theGeneral Library was replaced by Venetian mosaic. At the same time new desks and chairswere substituted for the old ones in the reading room, and the seating capacity was therebyincreased nearly one third. In 1904, Mr. Davis asked to lay down his office as Librarian at the end of another year and APPENDIX TO THE HISTORT %^1
