ors of the Weir Brick Company. The Weir Brick Company is another house of great prominence. The pro-prietors are John W. and Edward O. Hart, Chester S. Hart acting as treasurerof the company, which was established in 1865. Over a million of bricks areannually produced, including building and paving bricks, large quantities beingloaded into cars direct from the yard. The Phoenix Manufacturing Co. was established in 1844, and is the oldestestablishment engaged in the manufacture of black lead crucibles in thiscountry. Its wares are specially commended by the officers of the UnitedStates Government. Its annual production is upwards of two million fivehundred thousand (2,500,000) numbers of crucibles. A. B. HTSTORY OF TOWNS AND CITIES. 299 NKW BEDFORD. NEW BEDFORD, long noted for its whale fisheries and for the wealthand urbanity of its people, is a city of 45,000 inhabitants, delightfullysituated on the west bank of the Acushnet river, which here broadensinto New Bedford harbor, on the north side of Buzzards Bay. It is 228 milesnortheast from New York, with which it has connection by steamboats; and is55 miles south of Boston, and connected with that place and the westerlyregions by the New Bedford & Taunton and the Fall River branches of theOld Colony Railroad; while the Fairhaven branch, just across the river, makesconnections, with the eastern towns and Cape Cod. A fine bridge 4,000 feetin length provides easy access to Fairhaven; and street cars run to this andother neighboring villages.
