enjoyable. The Old Colonyhas stations at Medfield Junction and Medfield. The Elm Tree Inn established in 1891 by A. O. Grant is the leading Hotelin Norfolk county. The hotel is very pleasantly located, having a wide piazzain front, and the entrance to it is lined with shade trees on each side of the walk.It is a four story frame building, has ample accommodations for one hundredguests and has all the modern conveniences; being fitted up with electric bells,steam heat, fire escapes etc. The table is first class, and tourists or travellerson business or pleasure will find this an excellent place to stop. It is also aLeague bicycle house and a large and first-class livery stable is connected. Mr.Grant has the welfare of his guests at heart, providing liberally for their com-fort and pleasure at reasonable rates. Many prominent persons of New York,Boston and other large cities make this hotel their summer resort. It is locatedon North street, within three minutes walk of Medfield station.

HISTORY OF TOWNS AND CITIES. 425 Searle, Dailey & Co., Medfield, one of the oldest and largest manufacturers ofstraw goods in this country was established in 1842 and is composed of the follow-ing gentlemen, H. A. Searle, G. F. Dailey and Col. E. V. Mitchell. Their plantsituated on North street, is one of the largest and most thoroughly equipped inthe United States, and discloses a system and completeness in every department,worthy of the highest commendation. The buildings are of large dimensionsand subdivided for the convenient and systematic prosecution of the work intovarious departments. Steam power is used and employment is given to 1,000to 1,200 hands, whose annual output is in the vicinity of 5,000 cases. All kindsof ladies and childrens straw goods are made and are in great demand by theleading jobbers. The management of the factory is in the hands of Col. E. V.Mitchell, a gentleman practically acquainted with the business in all its branches,and thorougly alive to the be
