tencampment of the regiment,—the rendezvous of theNinth before the latters departure for the front. The monument is over eighteen feet in height andis constructed of granite quarried at Barre, Vt. On thefaces are bronze tablets bearing the names of the officersand men of the command who lost their lives in the ser-vice. The figure of a soldier surmounts the pedestal,the whole effect being eminently appropriate. On thebase of the monument are displayed the names of leadingengagements in which the command took part. FourDahlgren brass guns, fastened to bed plates, surroundthe memorial, and were donated by the United Statesgovernment. The builder of this imposing monumentwas J. R. Maxwell of New Haven. The entire cost wasin the neighborhood of $4,500, of which amount $1,000was given by the State of Connecticut, the rest beingrealized by popular subscription. The monument was erected under the auspices of theVeteran Association of the Ninth, the committee havingcharge of the work being:

The committee performed its work in the most thor-ough manner. It was splendidly assisted by the othersurviving veterans of the Ninth and by an appreciativepublic. The committee decided to have the dedicatoryexercises take place Aug. 5, 1903, the anniversary of thebattle of Baton Rouge, in which the Ninth participated. The dedicatory programme, as arranged, provided fora great military and civic parade in which some 6,000 or8,000 men were to take part, and other appropriate fea-tures.
