Active operationsv/ere planned and preparations made for the coaming campaign.Those in the hospital who- were not fit to return to their regi-ments were sent toWashington or convalescent camps. Cavalry■expeditions were sent out to find out the location and strength ofthe Confederate outposts. Once in a while the enemy did thesame thing, and about the 9th or loth of February the Con-federate cavalry, under General Stuart, made a dash on thepicket line at Hartwood Church, capturing about fifty of theUnion pickets. Along in April, the Fourth Regiment was detached from theBrigade. Three companies under Lieutenant-Colonel Ewingwere ordered to do provost duty for the First Division, and theother seven companies, under Colonel Birney, were train guard atgeneral headquarters.
