somewhat broken.The second closed upon it and pressed on until we saw the linesweep up over the parapet of the highest breastwork, and the reg-iment waved their colors above them. Three thousand prisonerswere captured, and the rest of the Confederate force hastily re-treated. In front of us the enemy withdrew as soon as the heightsof Fredericksburg were taken, and all was quiet. The batterylimbered up and drove toward the town. At length the ordercame for us to follow them. Between the time of our first arrivaland 12 oclock, when we were withdrawn, we lost three killed andseventeen wounded from the Fifteenth. The three bodies of ourfallen comrades were left unburied upon the field. We had nottime for their burial, and had not power to bear them in our armson our march. James W. where Dr. Hall administered such aid as could be rendered underthe circumstances. We bore them on as far and as fast as we were SECOND FREDERICKSBURG. -53 able, when Colonel Penrose put spurs to his horse and rode intothe town, and soon met us with ambulances sufficient to carry allthe wounded. Smith C. Gage, Company C, with two or three others, had beensent forward to a rifle pit in advance of our position, on the Rich-mond road, to act as a sharpshooter. He received a severe woundin the breast. After some time he was reached by the di-ummersand brought to our rear, and was one of those sent to Fredericks-burg. He was taken to the General Army Hospital at Washing-ton, where he died from his wound May 14th. Captain Lindsley,who had been ordered to send the men, selected him, and Gageobeyed without hesitation.
