General Sedgwick who on the morning of the 30th was com-manding two corps says: At 2 a. m. of the morning, havingbeen placed in command of the 5th and 6th Corps, I movedabout two miles to the right. It was the intention of the generalcommanding to make a sudden and determined attack upon theenemys left under a concentrated fire from our batteries. Themovement of our troops had been carefully concealed from theenemy and at the appointed time 8 a. m. I opened fire from sixbatteries, and prepared to move promptly upon the enemys po-sition at 9 a. m., the hour fixed for the assault. The enemy re-plied promptly from several batteries. At 8:15 I received theorder of the commanding general to suspend my attack untilfurther orders. The batteries ceased firing upon both sides,

Through this ravine Mine Run flowed. It was a nar-row stream, now deep and on account of the intense cold waspartly frozen over. The run had precipitous banks with boggyapproaches, throughout the entire length of the ravine. Sometime during the morning of the 30th General Sedgwicktook a gun, and in the dress of a private soldier walked out tothe Federal pickets.
