ey bore the brunt of the battle with a coolness andfirmness, which, I venture to say, has never been exceeded inany battle in the war. It would be difficult for me to say too much in praise ofthese veterans who made this fight. Although the appearanceof the enemys fourth line of battle made their ultimate defeatcertain, they were not whipped. On the contrary, they werefighting steadily in an unbroken front, when I ordered theirretirement. The fact speaks for itself, Monocacy on theirbattle flags is a word of honor. If we had had trenching toolsin time, no doubt the losses among the veterans would have beengreatly lessened. Too much credit can not be given GeneralRicketts for his skill and courage. In this battle, we did notlose a flag or a gun. In the face of an overwhelming force ofthe enemy my entire command was brought from the field./List of Casualties. The following officers and men of the regiment were killed,or died of wounds received in this battle: Adjutant Anthony M. Martin.
