The walls at the most elevated part on theinside are twenty-one feet in height, and forty-two in breadth at the base; but on the outsideaverage only five feet in height. This forms apassage of about three hundred and sixty inlength, leading by a gradual descent to the lowground, where, at the time of its construction, itprobably reached the river. Its walls commenceat sixty feet from the rampart of the fort, and in-crease in elevation as the way descends towardsthe river; and the bottom is crowned in the cen-tre, in the manner of a well-formed turnpike road.
