It was partlysurrounded by a ditch, while on one quarter a pre-cipitate bank formed its defence. The enclosurewas connected with the river by a causeway—acircumstance of usual occurrence in connectionwith works of the kind, as we shall afterward see. On the Tonawanda, at an interval of a couple ofmiles, are the remains of two other enclosures,the one forming an area of four and the other ofeight acres. The intermediate tract between theforts has been regarded as the site of an ancientcity, from the signification of the name, which, inthe Indian vocabulary, signifies the double fortifiedtown.
