on this coast of the Pacific contrive tomake a good subsistence on various seeds, and byfishing. The latter they carry on by means ofrafts or canoes, made of tule (bullrush) with whichthey go a great way to sea. They are very civil. All the males, old and young, go naked; the wo-men, however, and the female children, are de-cently covered from their breasts downward. Wefound on our journey, as well as in the placewhere we stopped, that they treated us with asmuch confidence and good-will as if they hadknown us all their lives. But when we offeredthem any of our victuals, they always refusedthem. All they cared for was cloth, and only forsomething of this sort would they exchange theirfish or whatever else they had. During the wholemarch we found hares, rabbits, some deer, and amultitude of berendos (a kind of wild goat). I pray God may preserve your health and lifemany years. From this port and intended mission of SanDiego, in North California, third July, 1769. Francis Junipero Serra.
