The I2ist Regiment was raised in the summer of 1862 by ColonelChapman Biddle, and completed by union with a fin«3 body of menbrought from Venango County by Colonel Elisha W. Davis, onceSpeaker of the Legislature, who became its lieutenant-colonel. It first joined the army near Sharpsburg, after the battle ofAntietam, marching with it to the Rappahannock. Its first generalaction was at Fredericksburg, where, in the assault of Aleades divisionupon the enemys lines, it lost one-fifth of its force and was congratu-lated for its behavior both by )\Ieade and Reynolds. With this considerable diminution of its strength, details forartillery, ambulance and commissariat service, and a full company atcorps headquarters, it was reduced on the night of June 30, 1863, to256 muskets and six line officers present for duty.
