FAC-SIMILE OF LETTER FROM GENERAL GRANT. — 6y^ — is after same general style, containing four acorns upon a leafy twig wrought likethe ear-rings and comb. On the back are the words inscribed: Mrs. GeneralGrant, from Browne & Spaulding. The jewels are enclosed in a fine purplevelvet case lined with white velvet satin; this bears the inscription in gold: Pre-sented to Mrs. General U. S. Grant, by Browne & Spaulding, 570 Broadway,N. Y. The wood used in this set was cut from the apple tree under whichGeneral Grants officers met General Lee on the morning of the surrender,^April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court-House, Virginia. FLAG OF TRUCE AT APPOMATTOX. Gainsville, Georgia, March 12, 1886.J. L, Smith, Esq. : Dear Sir: Your favor 8th inst. received and noted. Captain Sims, of Colum-bia, South Carolina, was the bearer of the flag of truce on the day of capitulationat Appomattox.
