Hisgreat-grandson, John Smith, purchased a large estate in Mcndon. in that part of thetown now called East Blackstone, and moved his family and his household goodsthere in 1742. His grandson, Samuel Smith, Sr.. son of George Smith, married Hannah Read,widow of Woodbury Comstock. Hannah Read was a descendant of Colonel ThomasRead, of Salem, a son of Sir Thomas Read, of Brocket Hall, in Hertfordshire, Eng-land, who came to America in the great fleet in 1630 and settled in Salem. Samuel .Smith. Jr., son of Samuel. Sr.. and Hannah (Rcad-Comstock) Smith, wasoorn in Mendon (now called East Blackstonel September 24. 1806. and the old home-stead where he spent his boyhood is still standing and in good condition. He attendedthe old district schools : the sessions were short and only tor a few weeks in thewinter, but for his <iwn efforts and private study his education would have been verymeager. When he wasnineteen he left home and came to Uxhridge. Here he lived twenty years, engagedin the woolen business, and taking an active part in both town and church affairs. Hemarried in Uxbridge, Harriet Blackman. a descendant of John Dunham, one of tlieearly pioneers of Connecticut. Her grandfather Dunham was killed in the Rev-olutionary War. She had also three great-uncles who served in the Revolution, oneof whom. Samuel Dunham, lived to be one hundred years old, and was the oldestRevolutionary pensioner in Comiecticut when he died. Three cliildren were born ofthis marriage: \\oodbury Comstock. mentioned later, and two daughters. SarahMaria and Harriet Amelia.
