Shipley has been a member of the First Baptist church of Waterbury since 1868.He was made a deacon of the church in 1871 and since 1884 has been a trustee of theBaptist state convention of Connecticut. He was also vice president of the WaterburyYoung Mens Christian Association in 1883, was a member of the Waterbury ScientificSociety in 1895, and for several years has been a trustee of the Sufiield School of Suf-fiekl, Connecticut. In politics Mr. Shipley is a republican and represented the first wardof Waterbury on the board of aldermen from 1880 until 1883. He was a member of theboard of finance in the latter year and also a member of the board of education in 1895.He is widely known in Masonic circles, having been connected with the order since 1864and he has been elected to office in its various bodies.
