conspicuously in the laterhistory of Illinois, inhabited the northwestern portion of the State.By long residence together and intermarriage they had substan-tially become one people. Drake, in his Life of Black Hawk,speaks of these tribes as follows: The Sacs and Foxes fought theirway from the waters of the St. Lawrence to Green Bay, and afterreaching that place, not only sustained themselves against hostiletribes, but were the most active and courageous in the subjugation,or rather the extermination, of the numerous and powerful Illinoisconfederacy. They had many wars, offensive and defensive, withthe Sioux, the Pawnees, the Osages, and other tribes, some of whichare ranked among the most fierce and ferocious warriors of thewhole continent; and it does not appear that in these conflicts, run-ning through a long period of years, thej were found wanting inthis, the greatest of all savage virtues.
