l-ler was John Grimes, who removed at a later date toOhio. William Ramsey and his son Jesse were formany years millers at the Thornton mill and the Gil-more mill, a «hort distance up the stream. TheThornton mill is now carried on by Lynch & Hanna.After John McDougal closed his tavern stand nopublic-house was kept in Merrittstown from that dayto this. The opening of the National road had turnedtraffic from the route through Merrittstown, and ofcourse the consequence of no travel was no tavern. After William Cunningham closed his store, in 1817,Merrittstown was without a local trading-place until1830, when John Smith opened trade in a store-housebuilt by George Brown, the blacksmith. In that yearHugh Gilmore had a distillery near the town, andElijah Coleman was still carrying on his tannery.Coleman was no less famous for being a tanner thanhe was for being the father of nineteen children.Hiram Durnell had been the village shoemaker from1818. LUZERNE TOWNSHIP. 649 Iiis shop in 1822, prospered, and went to store-keeping.He traded about ten years, when in consequence ofbusiness misfortunes he became deranged. GeorgeBrown, who was Merrittstowiis fourth store-keeper,was the successor of Robert Brown, and the prede-cessor of Samuel Henderson and John Gallaher. In1876 the village had two stores, kept by Alfred Cun-ningham and Thomas D. Miller. Cunninghamsstore was burned in 1877 and Millers in 1879, atwliich time the post-office with allthe mail, being inJlillers store, was likewise destroyed. In 1822 the foot-bridge across Dunlaps Creek atMerrittstown was washed away by a flood, and fromthat on to 18.36 fording or ferrying was the method ofcrossing.
