El well : He was born in Warren, O., June 22, 1820. GeneralElwell is a graduate of the Cleveland Medical College ;was admitted to the bar in 1854 and has since been amember of the Cleveland bar. He wTas a member of theOhio Legislature from 1853 to 1855, and was editor andpublisher of the Western Law Monthly ; also a profess-or in the Ohio and Union Law College and ClevelandMedical College. GENERAL J. J. ELWELL. soldiers and sailors monument. 585 medical jurisprudence, which is a standard work on thatsubject, and has passed through four editions. He entered the military service in August, 1861,bringing an order from the Secretary of War for theraising of the Second Ohio Cavalry on the Western Re-serve, which he helped raise and equip and was 1,200strong. He also equipped the Third Ohio Cavalry andShermans Brigade. Early in 1862, he joined GeneralDavid Hunter and proceeded with him to Port Royal,S. C, and was promoted to Chief Quartermaster of theDepartment of the South, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He served in this department two years andparticipated in all the operations against Charlestonunder Hunter, Gillmore and other generals. He took ahand in the bloody assault on Fort Wagner on the nightof July 18, 1862, where the Union troops were repulsedwith a loss of 1,500 men in an hour. General A.
