The building longwent by the name of the Van Rensselaer church. Thechurch was dedicated on the 8th of November, 17G7, byDominic Fryenmoet, with the simple ceremony of preach-ing a sermon. The text was Jeremiah vii. 2 : Stand inthe gate of the Lords house, and proclaim there this word,and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judali, thatenter in at these gates to worship the Lord. Two childrenwere baptized on that occasion, namely, Kommerlje, whoseparents were Johannis MuUer and Fytje Halcnbeck ; alsoJohannis, son of Coenrad Mauer and Jeertje Smidt. Itwas not as long as the present building by some thirty feet,and had not the front tower nor the wings. There wassimply a quaint little belfry on the front part of the roof,which contained a diminutive bell, ranging somewhere be-tween a cow-bell and a steamboat-bell. The
