Therewere other raids after this—one on October 28th when the German plane flewso close overhead that one could almost distinguish the insignia on the uniformof the pilot. It so happened that just at this very moment we were receivinga heavy shell fire, both gas and H. E. and while our machine gunners madea strenuous effort to bring this man down they were unable to fire very manyshots. With all these hardships there was a lighter side to life in the trenchesabove Brabant. E Battery was unfortunate in not having its own kitchen, asSergeant Isidore Zeman naturally favored his own D Battery, but most of themen of E Battery were real artillery men who could look out for themselves.Though it was never finaly proven, Zeman was probably not far wrong in be-lieving that E men stole his jam, during one of those periods when the cookshad skipped out because of heavy shell fire.
