Theywere another of the old-time merchants willing to givethe other fellow his full share in a trade. The spice importing house of Ruf us Story & Co. was atNos. 7 and 9 Front street. Mr. Story was one of the best-known merchants in the city and bore the reputation ofbeing a remarkable financier. Returning on the west side of Front street, at No. 22was the tea firm of James Austin. J. W. Wilson & Co.,the largest importers of Mexican goat skins in the coun-try, as well as being large receivers of coffee, were atNo. 52. The roasting plant and offices of Arbuckle Broswere at No. 58. This firm came from Pittsburgh. Dur-ing the Civil War the use of package goods reached itsheight. There being no pure food laws, the wording onthe packages did not always tell the true contents. Areaction set in and it became extremely difficult to sellany package goods, and
