made Lieutenant-Colonel.The regiment was assigned to Martins, afterwards Kirk-lands, Brigade, and its story, told by Adjutant George M.Rose, appears in Vol. 3 of this work. On the death of Colo-nel A. D. Moore, in front of Petersburg, JSTethercutt becameColonel and 15 March, 1865, was assigned to the commandof the brigade of Junior Reserves which he held at Benton-ville and up to the surrender of Johnstons army. ColonelISTethercutt was assassinated at his home in Jones Countyafter the war while sitting at supper with his family by sometraitor who wished to avenge punishment received during thewar. He was a most gallant, capable officer. There was another Eighth Battalion (Reserves) command-ed by Major J B. Ellington, which in January, 1865, wasmerged into the Seventy-second ISTorth Carolina (Third Jun-ior Reserves.) The battalion given as the Eighth in Moores Roster (Vol.4, pp. 359-372) was officially known during the war as theTenth Battalion and as such its history is herein given.

Shortly after the outbreak of the war in 1861, the Legis-lature of Xorth Carolina, co-operating with the ConfederateGovernment in defending the entrance to the Cape Fear riverand the harbor of Wilmington, passed an act authorizing theformation of a battalion of heavy artillery, to be composed ofthree companies, to man the defences then being and after-wards that might be, constructed for the protection of thecoast and shores close to the Cape Fear bar at either the FortCaswell or New Inlet entrance. One of the companies was raised by Captain, afterwardsMajor Alexander Mediae, of Wilmington, composed largelyof men from New Hanover, Columbus, Bladen and Robesoncounties; and its officers, at its organization, were AlexanderMcEae, Captain; W H. Brown, —. —. Ryan, A. S. Harts-field, and afterwards John A. Gilchrist, John J. Bright andR. P Allen, Lieutenants. This became Company C. Thesecond company was organ
