But the poet was not happy even after thebrilliant success of the first part of this great work, which he pub-lished in London in 1590, nor well off even after he had receiveda royal pension of ;^50 a year (1591). Many of his early poemswere collected and published about the same time, and after hisreturn to Ireland he wrote Colin Cloufs come Home again (1595). Hehad already married Elizabeth Boyle (who was not his first love) in1594, and at the end of 1595 he was again in London superintendingthe * publication of three more books of the Faery Queen, whichwere as well received as the earlier instalment. In 1598 the Earlof Tyrone swept over the new Munster plantation with blood andfire: Spenser and his wife fled for their lives from their burninghouse, leaving behind their baby and perhaps lost books of thegreat epic; and a few months after the poet died in great povertyin London. But he was buried in Westminster Abbey and theEarl of Essex paid the funeral expenses.
