Description Historic Whites Bay telegraph cable station building, the South Island end of the first submarine telegraph cable laid in 1866 across Cook Strait from Lyall Bay on the North Island to Whites Bay on the South Island. The Whites Bay Telegraph Station was operated by seven government staff until 1873 when technical improvements meant the operation of the submarine cable could be relocated to Blenheim, and the station was closed in 1895.[1]
