Notes
  • Significance: The factory is part of Speedwell Village, and is important for its role in the development of the telegraph. The original structure was a 1 story building with a garret and cellar dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century. About 1830, a second story was added for cotton looms, and in 1850 a grist mill was set up in the first floor and basement, run by an overshot waterwheel 24 feet in diameter. The exterior of the factory now appears as it did in 1838...
