| Description |
On 27 October 1979 Mansion House on Kawau Island was opened to the public as part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park. Governor Sir George Grey purchased Kawau Island in 1862 and renovated the former mining manager’s house (copper was mined on Kawau from 1844 to 1852). This now imposing residence was known as Mansion House, and was occupied by Sir George Grey until 1888. From 1910 the house was used as a guest house, and in 1967 it was sold to the government. Dominion Breweries leased the property and operated a hotel there until 1977. The Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board, created in 1967 and disestablished in 1990, restored Mansion House as close to its condition in 1890 as possible. The maritime park’s logo can be seen on the picture. The Kawau Island Historic Reserve is currently managed by the Department of Conservation.
