Notre-Dame du Rosaire. (Cologne, église Saint-André.) Cet important tableau commémore la fondation de la première confrérie du Rosaire. La Vierge au manteau est le type de la Vierge des confréries. Des angelots portent sur sa tête trois couronnes de roses, alternativement blanches et rouges, pour les « mystères joyeux » et pour les douloureux ; le petit Jésus joue avec un chapelet à grains noirs ; aux pieds de la Vierge, les fidèles égrènent le rosaire. À droite, les clercs, derrière le Pape ; à gauche, les laïcs, derrière, l’empereur. Tout le détail révèle une origine dominicaine. Les deux saints qui soutiennent le manteau de la Vierge sont le fondateur de l’Ordre, reconnaissable à l’étoile qui scintille sur son front, et saint Pierre Martyr, le poignard dans le sein, le crâne ouvert. Près de saint Dominique, les mots : « Diligite salutatem » ; près de saint Pierre, ceux-ci : « Charitas maneat. » Dans la foule, les dominicains sont en majorité ; le gros prieur à calotte noire, agenouillé au premier plan, est sans doute Jacques Sprenger, le promoteur de la confrérie de Cologne, inquisiteur d’Allemagne, et le fameux auteur du Marteau à sorcières. |
