Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Hiram R. Watson House, 166 Beard Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. An unusual Arts & Crafts-style residence dating to 1909, the Watson House's design owes a significant debt to Frank Lloyd Wright's contemporaneous Prairie School work with its flat roof, prominent horizontal lines, and earth-toned façade faced in contrasting materials (brick on the ground floor, stucco above; with dark wood trim). However, many other decorative elements point to a more traditional application of Craftsman architecture: the gently sloping eaves that circumnavigate the top of the building are supported by unusual convex quarter-circular brackets; the half-width front porch features tapered pillars separated by low-pitched triangular arches and sawn balusters in unusual decorative patterns. Hiram R. Watson (1862-1923) was the original owner; a manufacturer of kitchenware by trade, he was a partner in the firm of Russell & Watson. He lived in the house until his death.
