Description

From: Lt. Col. C. R. Forrest, from A Picturesque Tour Along the River Ganges and Jumna in India (London: R. Ackermann, 1824)

Hindoo Ghaut on the Ganges below Benares

This is plate 12 from Charles Ramus Forrest's 'A Picturesque tour along the rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India'. Forrest was an East India Company official who made excursions along the rivers, producing drawings "attentively copied from nature, and in many instances coloured on the spot, ... while the magic effects of the scenes represented were still impressed on [his] mental vision".

In December 1807, Forrest set out on an excursion from Calcutta. On approaching Benares, he came upon this "sweet and quiet" scene. Forrest writes: "before we got sight of its venerable pile, we came unexpectedly, on a sudden turn of the road, in view of one of the ghauts so often met with on the Ganges, and the small pagoda of the village, which latter was concealed from our sight by the thick and luxuriant foliage. The large tree is a peepul, of the birkut or banian tribe, but which does not throw out those pendent shoots on which the other supports the weight of its overgrown branches."
