İstanbul Hilton, the first five star hotel in Turkey, opened in 1955. The building was designed by the American architecture office Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1952. The local consultant and the participating architect was Sedad Hakkı Eldem. Eldem was expected to incorporate vernacular elements to the design. With its entrance canopy resembling a flying carpet, the Hilton is considered to be one of the great examples of “International Style.” The hotel broke the flow of Park No. 2 by disconnecting Taksim Gezi Park from Maçka Park so undermining the zoning plan of Henri Prost.
