Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 1 Built 1944 The XH-44 was the first American helicopter to successfully fly with coaxial rotors and was also the first helicopter to have metal rotor blades. Designed and built by the 19 year old Stanley Hiller Jr., he carried out test flights on his parent drive and at the University of California in Berkeley, where he was a student. While not put into production, the XH-44 established Hiller as a viable helicopter company. Hiller donated the XH-44 to the Smithsonian Institute in 1953 and it was restored in 1974. It is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
