ith a muddy flow of water, and it was this waterwhich was to make the dead desert a land of plenty. The town had started in the sagebrush and withinabout a twelve-month had grown from nothing to a placeof over one thousand inhabitants. The man who hadbeen there a full year was an old settler—a pioneer.This was to be the metropolis of the irrigated country,and it already had some substantial buildings, and theplace resounded with the blows of hammers and theclink of trowels. As a whole, small structures werethe predominant ones, and shanty houses, often scarcelylarger than a good-sized dry-goods box, were common.Some people were dwelling in tents, or in the upperportion of a covered wagon that had been lifted offthe wheels and set on the ground. There was much coming and going of teams on thedusty highways, trade was lively in the numerousstores, and some business seemed to be doing in thetwo diminutive wooden banks. They werein charge of a peaked little man in shirt sleeves whohovered about proclaiming their merits, and, betweenwhiles, expectorating tobacco juice. His favorite claimwith regard to his team was: There aint nopimples on em anywhere. Theyre good sound horses,one of the finest driving teams in this country. It aintoften you get two such as these.
