Summary
[edit]DescriptionHighland Church and graveyard (51745857351).jpg |
The Cille Choirille Roman Catholic church lies in a remote part of Scotland and can be found 5.25 miles (8.4 Km) East of Spean Bridge. It's notable in several ways. The first church here dates from the mid-1700's and is unusual because in 1560 all of Scotland changed to Protestantism. The church was rebuilt in 1933 and the work was partly paid for by Canadian descendants of emigrants from the Lochaber region in which the church is located. The church sits on a small, but steep hill and the graveyard climbs steeply above the church. The church could be seen high above the nearby A86 road and that's how I discovered it. The church featured in the BBC Light Drama series "Monarch of the Glen" (2000-2005) as being where one of the main characters was married. It is also where the Laird was buried (in the programme). It was called Glenbogle church for the series. Britains' highest mountain, Ben Nevis, is just 10 miles away and can be seen at the top of the picture. |
