Summary
[edit]DescriptionHigh Queen Street, Witton Park - geograph.org.uk - 1724713.jpg |
English: High Queen Street, Witton Park. From the village web site http://www.daledaniel.fsnet.co.uk/index.html this is 'the village that refused to die'.
It was built to serve the local iron-works which was in decline as early as 1900. In the 1950s and '60s it was named along with 120 other, former mining communities, as one of County Durham's D-category villages, classified for demolition, often in the face of considerable local resistance. The people were to be rehoused and given work in nearby towns (including the new town, Peterlee). The D village policy officially ended in June 1977 when Durham County Council eventually decided to encourage investment in the previously listed villages. Although much of the space in the newly created Witton Park 'village green' 1586559 was a result of demolition, there are many signs that the village is once again a healthy community, with several new developments. The D category policy and its impact is well described on the web site for the Durham village of Haswell NZ3743 http://www.haswell-history.co.uk/modern.html |
