Summary
[edit]DescriptionHigh Level Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne - geograph.org.uk - 760481.jpg |
English: High Level Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne A Stephenson bridge, built between 1847 and 1849 this bridge carried both road (underneath)and rail (on top). It was closed to car traffic in 2005 for refurbishment and was expected to open again later that year - this has now slipped as severe cracks in some of the iron girders were found. The bridge is now due to reopen in Summer 2008 but almost certainly there will be no cars allowed - the roadway has been narrowed (it was very hairy driving across before as the lanes were narrow with no crash barrier between) so it is now only wide enough for traffic going one way, speculation is that will be buses only |
