Summary
[edit]DescriptionHigh Altar 02 - National Cathedral - DC.JPG |
English: Rood screen separating the nave from the chancel at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
The nave is the main part of a church, where the congregation sits. The chancel is the area at the front, where the choir and altar are located. A "rood" is an ancient Old English word meaning "pole" or "cross-beam." In medieval churches, this pole helped reinforce the columns at the front of the church. But "rood" soon came to mean the cross on which Jesus was crucified. In time, the word "rood" also meant "crucifix." The "rood screen" is generally an ornate but generally open screen where the rood would normally be. Its function is to mimic the curtain in the tabernacle in the Jewish Temple, which separated the Holy of Holies from the sinners in the congregation. Some rood screens were quite substantial -- so much so that people would walk out on top of them, and they supported choirs. But most rood screens are very insubstantial, like this one. Most of the time, you would just see a crucifix on top (known as the "rood loft"). The rood screen at the Washington National Cathedral was donated in 1939 by Colonel Reginald Huidekoper and his brother, Frederick Huidekoper. |
