Summary
[edit]DescriptionHigh-FeTi diabase dike (Duluth Complex, Mesoproterozoic, 1099 Ma; Twin Lakes East Skyline Parkway roadcut, Duluth, Minnesota, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Diabase dike in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.
This rock is part of the widespread Duluth Complex, a ~1.1 billion year old suite of igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota that is associated with volcanism in the Lake Superior segment of the ancient Mid-Continent Rift System. The brown-weathering rocks shown above are part of a mafic igneous dike that has intruded quartz monzodiorite. Dikes are planar igneous intrusions that cut across country rocks. As such, they postdate the host rocks. This igneous dike is composed of high-iron, high-titanium diabase (microgabbro). Geologic unit & age: Duluth Complex, late Mesoproterozoic, 1099 Ma Locality: Twin Lakes East outcrop (Twin Ponds East outcrop) - roadcut along the northern side of Skyline Parkway, Duluth, northeastern Minnesota, USA (46° 46’ 43.77” North, 92° 07’ 16.40” West) |
