Description

Heterobasidion irregulare (Underw.) Garbel. & Otrosina

Image location: Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Growing effused-reflexed on the root of a virginia pine near dead and living virginia pines, beech and sugar maple. Cap surface dry and somewhat rough. Seems to be perennial with at least 2 seasons of growth. Melzer’s reagent staining pore surface brown.

Recognized by sight: Heterobasidion annosum is a European species and H. irregulare is the only known Eastern North American species in the H. annosum group.
