Nederlands: Militair-technisch was het ontwerp uit 1774 voor het Kruithuis van commandeur-ingenieur generaal Chambrier prima - als het in Nederland zou staan. Door de hoge kosten is men pas gestart met bouwen in 1775. De muren en het gewelf zijn sterk genoeg om mortiervuur te weerstaan en de vensters zijn zo ontworpen dat er geen vonken bij het kruit konden komen. Eromheen light een gracht, als verdediging en om water op te pompen als er brand was. Met als gevolg: een te hoge luchtvochtigheid om kruit in op te slaan.
English: From a military-technical point of view, the design (1744) of the gunpowder storage building by commander-engineer Chambrier was excellent - had it been located in the Netherlands. Due to the high costs, construction could start only in 1775. The walls and the vault are strong enough to withstand mortar fire and the windows are designed in such a way that the gunpowder was protected from sparks. The building is surrounded by a moat, for defense and the pump water in case of a fire. As a consequence, the humidity was too high to store gunpowder.
