Nederlands: Een vier meter hoog ʼreuzenkindʼ van glas, dat maar liefst 15.000 kilo weegt. Het werk is gemaakt door kunstenaar Herman Lamers, die het de titel: ʼhet jongetje dat zich als reus voordoetʼ meegaf.
De plek van het kunstwerk bij het protonentherapiecentrum is niet toevallig gekozen. Het kunstwerk is gebaseerd op een 3D-scan en symboliseert de mens die bergen verzet in technische en medische ontwikkeling. Daarmee symboliseert het ook de totstandkoming van protonentherapie als nieuwe bestralingsbehandeling in Nederland. Het jongetje staat voor het voortbestaan van de mens, eeuwig overlevend door eeuwige vooruitgang. In het protonentherapiecentrum worden ook kinderen met kanker bestraald met protonen. Zij kunnen in het bijzonder baat hebben bij protonenbestraling omdat hiermee gezond weefsel wordt gespaard. Dat is extra belangrijk voor kinderen omdat zij in de groei van hun leven zijn en hun gezonde lichaamscellen extra gevoelig zijn voor straling. Door 450 glasplaten van 10mm te stapelen en te verlijmen is een transparant en indrukwekkend beeld van een jongetje ontstaan, dat zowel stoer als kwetsbaar oogt. |
