Wie informatie zoekt op het web komt in veel gevallen terecht op Wikipedia, de online encyclopedie die door internetgebruikers wereldwijd op vrijwillige basis geschreven is. Vandaag verschijnen er elke seconde 10 nieuwe artikels (zogenaamde 'lemma's') op Wikipedia. Door het systeem van 'peer review' kan deze gratis encyclopedie wedijveren met gevestigde waarden als de Encyclopedia Britannica.

Geert Van Pamel is mede-oprichter van Wikimedia België, vertegenwoordiger van de in San Francisco gevestigde non-profitorganisatie Wikimedia Foundation. Hij legt uit wat de filosofie achter Wikipedia is. Hoe wordt de kwaliteit bewaakt? Hoe onderscheid je relevante informatie van trivialiteiten? Maar ook: hoe belangrijk is gedegen nieuwsgaring in tijden van 'fake news'?
