Summary
[edit]DescriptionHesthesis montana (5478143831).jpg |
The exposed wings look like they could be off a robber fly, or perhaps a wasp. The lumps at the base of the wings are elytra, and the long antennae point to this being a longicorn beetle. Hesthesis montana det. F. Vitali, 2019. Possibly on Epacris pulchella. Dharawal Nature Reserve, NSW Australia, February 2011. DAFWA Insect Collection database has an image of Hesthesis angulata by Natarsha Zilm, a pinned specimen from WA with similar markings. Its elytra however, have a different shape, a key identification feature of species in this genus. Keith McKeown, 1947, mentions Hesthesis cingulatus in Catalogue of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) of Australia. Ross Storey, circa 2000, includes this beetle in a list of the Australian Cerambycidae. Walpole Wilderness Fire Research Project, WA has an image of a similar looking beetle, though its white markings are broader. Australian Insect Common Names has a drawing of Hesthesis cingulatus, with a big yellow stripe on the abdomen. Funny, but I can't see any yellow on my beetle. Perhaps when she spreads her wings? |
