English: Hessy Jones' memorial This tablet beside the altar gives a fulsome tribute to a 16 year old daughter (spelling and punctuation as original):
Dutiful pliable & engaging meek unelated & humble, tho of uncommon Beauty & improvd Talents nobly rising above the temptation of a world mading after pleasures holding all its dazzling fashionable follies in detestation; shamd neither by scoffs nor railery from singularly devoting to her God the bloom of her youth; supported in sickness by an adoring Faith; thanking God for calling her when others were left; & facing Death, the King of Terrors, without fear. --Thus livd the lovely HESSY JONES, Peculiarly markd by God for his own, &, having made haste to keep his Comandments Finished her task at 16, full of Grace & ripe for Glory: The hope, pride, delight & admiration also Of her sorrowing friends, To whom she continues a Blessing even in Death By lessening their attachment to the Earth & quickening their longing for Heaven. O Grave! Thy Victory is over the unburyd, O Death! Thy sting is to the living. Ob. 19 Jan. 1771 fil.mat.max Jos. Jones M.B. |
