But the Party leaders continued to assist inrecruiting, didnt they? Some of them did. Mr. Redmond made aspeech to the Volunteers at Woodenbridge infavour of recruiting; the Sinn Feiners admittedat this time that they could not complain of hisadvising Irishmen to enlist, but they put forwardthe theory that the Volunteers had offered to de-fend the shores of Ireland, and that men who hadmade certain sacrifices should not be speciallyselected for opprobrium because they did not gofurther; moreover, men were on parade and couldnot express their opinions; it was not fair tolecture them in this position. But the real bit-terness was because the Bill was not signed andit was believed that it would be torn up as soonas the recruits had been collected. And so England again lost the confidence ofIreland.
