Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Herschell-Spillman Co is well remembered as the manufacturers of merry-go-rounds, miniature railways, and other amusement park rides. They also made proprietary engines in a separate division from 1902-1923. Customers were smaller makers of assembled cars, among them Abbott-Detroit, Ace (Ypsilanti MI), American (Plainfield NJ), Cartermobile, Checker Cab, Daniels, Du Pont, Pan American, and Pilot, as well as Fulton, Kearns-Dughie or Winther trucks, and even farm tractors like the Stockton.

Herschell-Spillman built a small number of automobiles in 1901, 1904-05, and in 1907, of course using their own engines.

Allan Herschell and Edward Spillman separated and became strong competitors after 1916, which prompted to change the name of the company to Spillman Engineering.

This advertisement dates from January, 1905 and shows a typical H-S four cylinder engine, available in three sizes. Usually, the designations refer first to the A.L.A.M. rating and then either to highest bhp, or bhp @ 1000 RPM.
