Summary

Description

In this house occupied by Thomas Davis bookseller Dr. Samuel Johnson first met James Boswell in 1763.

No. 8 Russell Street

This building was erected in 1759-60 and was owned by Thomas Davis a bookseller and publisher formerly an actor. Tom Davis was a very hospitable person and so many literateurs frequented here especially his back parlour. This is where Mr. Boswell met Doctor Johnson. It happened about 7pm the evening of the 7th of May 1763. Boswell was taking tea with Tom Davis when Johnson walked in. Boswell was rather apprehensive at meeting Johnson, for he knew he was rather prejudiced towards the Scots. He did not want Davis to mention that he was Scottish, but alas he did. Boswell remarked that he should not help. Johnson retorted, “That Sir I find what a great many of your countrymen cannot help”. Boswell then went on to write “The Life of Johnson.”
