Drawings of frescos depicting winged geniuses working in a shoe factory found in Herculaneum's House of the Stags (Deer).

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawings of frescos depicting winged geniuses working in a shoe factory found in Herculaneum's House of the Stags (Deer).

Translated full plate description: "Here is a shoe factory: the Geniuses of this profession have an air a little more vulgar than those of the fine arts and even of rustic occupations; and in this the painter has shown some talent for observation. Seated on a backless chair, next to a workbench, the first seems to be polishing a folded seam; the other is folding leather with effort, as if to soften and elongate it, something the craftsmen of Rome sometimes did with their teeth:

Dentibus antiquas solitus producer pelles (2).

"In Rome, under Severus, the bootmakers (caligariî) formed a powerful guild (3); they occupied the vicus Sandaliarius , in the fourth region (4).

"A round instrument lies on the table: it may be a shoehorn. Finished shoes are stored on a board and in a cupboard, each door of which folds into two parts. There are also forms, called ϰαλόποδες (5) by the Greeks, and colopodia et formae (1) by the Latins. The vases no doubt contain the various colors used to paint shoes, and above all atramentum sutorium , the shoe polish of that time (2)."
