(1) Philem. ap. Athen., XIV, p. 659. PE IN TITRE 8 2™e Série L3

English: Translated full description of Plate 132: "Silenus, seated on a clump of masonry, his right arm leaning on the mystical cistus, and holding a scepter formed from the plant called a ferrule, presents in his left hand, to a nymph standing before him, a diota or cup with two handles. The nymph, who is perhaps one of Bacchus' nurses, fills the cup of the demi-god with the help of a wineskin. The draperies of both figures are green, which several critics have taken to be an allusion to vine foliage. The legs of the two figures, the stones on which Silenus is seated, and the factories behind him, have been partly destroyed by time; but the two physiognomies are well preserved, and have a lively expression.

"The vignette offers two facing andro-sphinxes: the sphinx, not only male, that is to say having the body of a male lion, but also with the head of a man, is very rare in the most ancient monuments: the caprice of poets (1) and artists created some of them in the middle ages, and we have here an example of them.

"The panther in the middle frame of the vignette came from another fragment." - Louis Barré, 1870
